Kurosawa Sae, Fatal Frame 2, 2005
Sae is the main baddie in the survival horror game "Fatal Frame 2." This game scared the bejeezus out of me, mostly because of its really pioneering use of ambient sound. If I'd had surround sound I do not think I would have slept for a month.
I had a really great time making this, though. Once I'd made the red kimono and pulled together my super-secret recipe for fake blood (it's not that secret, ask me if you want it- many people seem to) I set the whole thing up in the back yard and went a little nuts. All the spatter was directed upwards, for you CSI nerds, and as a finishing touch I put some bloody handprints near the hem. My ex came home, took one look at it, and said "Well, you'll be the belle of the ball, I'll tell you that."
The costume has been surprisingly popular. It's too small for me as of this writing, but when I wore it out, it got a very positive response. One guy at Katsucon yelled at me across the hall, "You scared the crap out of me!"
