"Don't worry, I don't have low self-esteem. It's a mistake. I have low esteem for everybody else."
I think that most geeky women of Generation X will admit to having been influenced by the sarcastic stylings of Daria Morgendorffer. Back when MTV still had some "Music" in it, 1997 to be specific (really? I could have sworn it was earlier than that) Daria spun off of "Beavis and Butt-Head," in which she was the only girl who would speak to the eponymous characters, and into her own show. Bastion of level-headedness in a sick sad world, Daria set a high standard for the rest of us freaks and geeks.
We were sitting at the judges' table for Anime Next 2008 when Lisa turned to me and asked me if I wanted to be her Daria. Who would turn that down??? Unfortunately, I owned exactly none of the costume components, as it turned out. I bought the black pleated skirt, dug an orange tank top out of my closet since I was never totally sure whether Daria's shirt was orange or brown, and threw together the world's dodgiest jacket. Notch collars, as it turns out, are not my friend. And the wig I ordered turned out darker and more layered than I expected, but that's OK. I'm wearing a ton and a half of makeup to look like I am not wearing any.
